Sony A7 IV Announced, Priced $2,498, Available for Pre-Order

Sony has officially announced the new Sony A7 IV. It does double duty with strong stills and video performance. An advanced hybrid mirrorless camera, the a7 IV has the resolution and AF performance that appeals to photographers along with robust 4K 60p video recording for filmmakers and content creators.

The newly developed 33MP Exmor R CMOS sensor pairs with the BIONZ XR processor from the Alpha 1 to achieve quick shooting up to 10 fps and 4K 60p video recording, along with broad sensitivity up to ISO 51200 and a wide 15+ stop dynamic range. Beyond image quality, the sensor and processor also contribute to an advanced AI-based AF system that supports Real-time Eye AF and Real-time Tracking for intuitive AF control and subject tracking.

The new sensor is combined with Sony’s Bionz XR processing engine to deliver speed and resolution, with a host of new AF modes. New to the Sony A7 IV is an Eye AF Birds mode and Eye AF for video. These join the existing Eye AF and Animal Eye AF modes.

The a7 IV will be available from late December 2021 at a recommended price of $2499, a $500 increase over the launch price of the a7 III.

Sony a7 IV to be Announced in October 2021 w/ 33MP Sensor!

The Sony a7 IV camera is rumored to be announced by the end of October 2021. The announcement of the Sony a7 IV will be delayed due to the worldwide chip production shortage.

According to latest Sony rumors, the Sony a7 IV will use a newly developed 33MP full-frame sensor and 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE sensor-shift image stabilization. This IBIS tech will be effective to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 5.5 stops, 4K 60p video recording as well as a $2499 price tag and more.

It will be interesting to see how far the dynamic range and readout performance of this newly developed sensor will evolve in Sony A7 IV. In addition, the image stabilization has been improved from the current 5 stops of the Sony a7 III to 5.5 stops, which is equivalent to the Sony a7R IV. According to recent reports, the Sony a7R V will be released in 2022 with a new 102MP full frame sensor. Of course, the image here is not real, but the expectation is that the sensor resolution of the Sony A7RV will be 102MP.

There is a 20MP M4/3 Stacked BSI CMOS Sensor as well as a Brand new 40MP Fullframe Sensor is also surfaced.  Let’s discuss the 20MP M4/3 format sensor first. The sensor is designed for digital cameras. However it’s unlikely this sensor will be used for the GH6 as the resolution isn’t enough for the teased 5.6k video recording.
