Canon is allegedly working on a new EF 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM lens. The super telephoto zoom optic were previously rumored for late 2018 but there is no mention within the rumor mill since then.
Sony already announced its new FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS Lens and FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS Lens for mirrorless cameras. So, what about the Canon EF 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM super telephoto zoom lens?
We already reported that the new Canon EF 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM lens will NOT be an “L” lens, but has great optics and build quality, as to not “step on” the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens ($1,999), and it will have the competitive price to compete with both Sigma and Tamron.
Speaking of the super telephoto zoom lens segment, it has traditionally been dominated by third party manufacturers with Sigma and Tamron: Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 sports lens ($1,799, $200 off), Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Contemporary ($989), Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 G2 ($1,399), Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 lens ($869). All these 150-600mm lenses are selling really well. So, Canon does need a slower 600mm super telephoto zoom lens in their lineup.
As of today in mirrorless wars, we might never see such a lens for the EF mount, instead Canon could release it for RF mount. We guess that we’ll see the RF 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM Lens in the near future.
